the art of fugue

The Art of Fugue (2012) was an international music and dance research collaboration with baroque music ensemble The Bach Collegium San Diego and Brazilian violinist Rodolfo Richter, presented at UC San Diego. The Art of Fugue sought to create both counterpoint and marriage between contemporary / post modern choreography and the timeless, spacial geometry of Bach’s fugues. The stark juxtaposition between the formal, reverent presentation of baroque music played on authentic instruments, and the more informal, experimental choreographic score performed by contemporary dancers posed questions and propositions around the relationship contemporary innovation and aesthetics and historical reproduction and interpretation.

The Art of Fugue choreography was performed by Yolande Snaith, Alison Smith, Anya Cloud and Alicia Peterson Baskel.
